what the hell is Greek life and why is it important

So I was on TikTok and I saw this video of this guy and he was saying something bad about frats and I thought that the guy was doing too much, to be honest. But the comments were all like “no bid” “GEED”, and I thought that it was just weird because it was like a community of these people saying things to this old dude calling him a GEED. I just looked up the word GEED and here are two things I found.

So after seeing this video, I thought of this conversation I had with my friend Romet and I don’t remember why but he asked me what was the point of Greek life. And I didn’t really have an answer for him; I just said that it was good for meeting people and you have a lot of fun if you join. I told him that they were people that came to Ole Miss just because of the Greek life, and he said, “What about school?” I don’t know I guess that just isn’t that important to some people.

But I understand it. I am jealous that I’m not given some of the opportunities that comes with being in a frat. It’s so much fun. You get to hangout with a bunch of guys that probably like football just as much as you and you get all the alcohol (hell yeah brother) you could ever need. You probably will meet the best friends you’ll have in your whole life, and you get to hangout with girls (hell yeah brother) all the time. the allure of beer and girls is too strong for some…

But the truth is that it strips you of your individuality

I’m not in a frat so I can’t really be too confident in what I’m about to say but to me, the stereotypes of Greek life aren’t stereotypes but the norm. I just saw a dude wearing flip flops… he HAS to be in a frat. A girl with platinum blonde hair HAS to be in a sorority. It’s like everyone is trying to adhere to the stereotypes instead of break them. I don’t know. It’s even a part of the rules, like having to wear slacks and polos to class in Mississippi August heat or having to wear suits to the football games. Like what? Obviously people are allowed to wear flip flops I’m not the flip flop police,

I did research for this

So I was curious and I looked up “Greek life studies” and the first one was all about alcohol abuse and stuff so I’m gonna talk about that. Basically, the study says that Greek involvement leads to heavier alcohol use and misuse than not. I don’t think anyone is really arguing that; if I had to guess I would say alcohol is the main reason (in an indirect way) people join Greek life in the first place. During orientation, I was listening to these guys talk, and this dude was from New York. Everyone had to know he was from New York. He told some dude that he was coming to Ole Miss because he wanted to be in an SEC frat. Later, he was making fun of some autistic kid like actually autistic, not just a little strange, so… The more you want to be in a frat, the worse of a person you are, I guess? I like it. Anywho, here’s the study. It says that, there are a few reasons Greek folks drink more. One is that, people join the frat so they have the opportunity to drink more. Alcohol addiction? The second is that people view everyone around them drinking so much, that they start to view it as normal and start drinking more themselves. From the time of the participants fall semester of freshman year to spring semester of sophomore year, drinking amount was almost double. What does this mean? Greeks like alcohol, it’s pretty basic.

Greek Life is Racist?!?!?!?

So… I knew that Greek life was a pretty white activity. I did not know how white. So I went on Instagram and stalked a bunch of their pages just to try and find a single black person and I couldn’t do it. HOWEVER, I did see this one frat made their pledge class climb 110 flights of stairs on 9/11 and that’s pretty solid. “Well, Alex, why are there no black people?” I can only assume that black people are stripped of their blackness when they join a frat. I mean, it’s Mississippi. Ole Miss is a historically very racist school, and I imagine that black people are so heavily hazed that it’s barely worth it. It’s been well over a year since I touched this article, you can tell because my writing is so correct. But, since writing, I’ve learned about black frats and I played kickball with them and I kicked a home run and it was the first points of the game and I was the only white person and I was so hype. What a day for me! But yeah, frats are racist by nature I think.

I don’t remember why i wrote this I also don’t remember what the research said but you can go look at it i guess if you are interested

but yeah, I kinda hate Greek life, I think it’s corny and sad, and while I understand the pull and I understand why people join, I could never abandon myself like that. But I’m bored a lot and I hate that and sometimes I wish I had more friends so maybe I should’ve rushed, I don’t know. I’m not going to go to college to be told what to wear. Mfs pay to get told what to wear😭😭

Its important because

It’s the most college thing about college. And you know I bet it was a lot cooler to be in a frat like 20 years ago. Everything was cooler 20 years ago sadge. I don’t know why it’s important. Ask someone in a frat.

I’m going to write something else too today I think. Thanks for reading this is from over a year ago
